On Worldly Passions

25/10/2026 • Don't let your passions blind you from the light.

All sin derrives from worldly passions. In our modern age, they form the basis of our lives, careers, friendships, and everything in between. Personally, it has infected my mind so much, that I've come to realise that the very economy we live in cannot function without it (that would be an awesome topic to discuss for a later date).

All I really understood about the new testament was that Jesus is our saviour, and that if we call out to God, He can, through Jesus, "guide" us into salvation. But despite me wanting to give up my life to the Lord, and wanting to live a life of virtue, nothing happened. Because nothing happened, I began to stress. At times when you desperately need to get out of a bad place, especially if you have a history of anxiety, it can be very frustrating trying to find the voice that leads you out of sin. This is a major hurdle blocked my faith for a long time.

In other words, the passion of wanting to be fixed by the Holy Spirit blinded me from God's plan, because the "world" was controlling my thoughts.

It was nothing else other than my attachment to this world that brought stress upon me. Surveillence, war, enshittification, and everything along those lines all take control of my mind and the way I act, diverting my attention from the Lord, to events that will surely pass away. How am I to hear God's command, if I am deafened by the sounds of this world around me?

And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

— Matt. 14:29–31

The reality is, we as individuals cannot handle that which the world throws at us. With how interconnected the world is, it's borderline impossible to not be effected by these external events that are thrown our way. Thankfully, God understood this, and created Jesus who could forgive us of all our sin, and mentor us in love. So while life is a constant struggle, we should have faith in Jesus that he will guide us away from sin. Should we be distracted by the wind, we lose sight of what made us faithful in the first place.

Another thing that I am subconscious about is what I should do for God given these realisations. I have accepted Jesus into my life, and understand that everything in this world is sinful. But until I receive some command, miracle, or whatever, I'm to scared to do anything else. Should I change careers? Should I drop everything and run into the bush? Should I stand and fight in my home town? What should I do?

Well, by worrying about when I'm going to be saved, and what that even means in my life, I fall into the anxiety trap again.

Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are fixing me slowly. As am distracted by useless junk around me, I become anxious. When this happens, I can't sit around and pout about how horrible is. Instead, I'll turn to my God, repent for my sins, ask for guidance, then wait. I'm not equipped for this task alone, but God who created the world, my body, and my conscious is. So rather than become angry and bitter over that which I cannot control, I'll have faith that the Lord will clear the path, and guide me towards virtue.
